![]() He remained in that post until his death in 1899. In 1890, when the village of 300 people became an incorporated Town, he was elected Vienna´s first mayor. By 1885, he owned a great deal of real estate. Hine-a Freedmen´s Bureau agent, radical Republican, farmer, and realtor-settled in Vienna. It was hard to tell friend from foe, and the area changed hands so often that many families moved away for the duration of the war. When the Civil War began, Vienna became a camping ground for the two contending forces-switching hands several times. The railroad reached Vienna in 1859 and provided the impetus for growth into a real village. Prior to the arrival of the railroad, Vienna had one main road, known as the Old Georgetown Road, that twisted and turned to avoid mud holes and rocks. The change was willingly made, probably because the family owned a lot of land and had become influential in local affairs. The Hendricks wanted to change the Town’s name to Vienna, after their hometown in upstate New York (which is now Phelps, New York). Among those immigrants was a family named Hendrick that came to Vienna in 1854. In the mid-1800s, unseasonable weather in the north and attractive land values in northern Virginia brought considerable migration to Ayr Hill. As the village grew, it assumed the name Ayr Hill, by which it was known for nearly 100 years. ![]() In the 1760s, John Hunter, a native of Ayr County in Scotland, married Broadwater's daughter and built a tobacco plantation in 1767 in what became the Town and called it Ayr Hill after his native county in Scotland. Charles Broadwater, a prominent colonial soldier and public servant, who owned much of the land in the region and built his home here in 1754. Perhaps the first settler within the current Town limits was Col. Street names such as Old Courthouse Road and Lawyers Road still reflect that origin. The original Fairfax County Courthouse, built around 1742 near the present-day Tysons, likely marked the first European settlement in the Vienna area. works to enhance a spirit of community by providing awareness of Vienna’s past. We consistently seek to ‘be the church’ wherever we find ourselves.” And we try to live our lives in a way that carries the hope of Christ out into the world through our everyday living. In referring to her close-knit family, she states, “We don’t take ourselves too seriously … we do take the Gospel seriously. ![]() ![]() Hope and her husband, Sung Lee, have three children: Anna, Peter, and Maria. “Her engaging, open style both in preaching and interacting with people of all backgrounds was what inspired our call for her to be our next Lead Pastor.” “We are so excited to welcome a pastoral leader of Hope’s caliber to Vienna Presbyterian Church,” said the Co-Chairs of the Pastor Nominating Committee, John Hall and Yvonne Malloy. In all of Hope’s work, she demonstrates a strong belief that the people of the church are the face of Christ to the neighborhood and that God has already equipped us with all that we need to live out His mission and vision for the people right where we live and then to the world. Hope holds a Doctor of Ministry degree from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary as well as a Master of Divinity from Columbia Theological Seminary. She is anchored by a deep love of Jesus and is a nationally recognized preacher. Most recently she was the Lead Pastor at Kirkwood Presbyterian Church in Bradenton, Florida. Hope is a seasoned leader who has served congregations in Georgia, Pennsylvania, and Florida. Hope Italiano Lee as the church’s new Lead Pastor.
